Historical sites
There are many Buddhist and Hindu temples in the Kathmandu valley - the best to be found in the Durbar squares in Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur.  The temples of Swayambhu and Bouddhanath are spectacular sites. Pashupatinath is one of the holiest Hindu sites in the world and pilgrims visit from all over India . Situated on the sacred Bagmati river, the complex includes the renowned riverside ghats where Nepalis cremate their dead.
The nearby town of Bhaktapur (20 Km) is a world heritage site with many extraordinarily beautiful and historic temples and buildings.
Nepal has never been occupied and many buildings have been (or are being) restored thanks to local and foreign aid.

Trekking
Nepal is famous for its mountain treks which include breathtaking scenery and an opportunity to experience Nepali mountain culture. The classic walks include spectacular trekking in the Everest, Annapurna and Langtang regions staying in local guest houses. Treks can easily be arranged from Kathmandu through reputable local companies. The best times for trekking are in the spring and autumn.
